I want to be a Speech New Zealand Oral Assessor because.......................................
I would like to support the Speech New Zealand Oral Communication Syllabus by becoming involved as an assessor because I see it as a particularly valuable syllabus that I would like to see spread throughout our New Zealand schools.
Not all parents are in a position to provide their children with private tuition. This syllabus taught in a school situation and supported and assessed by Speech New Zealand gives a far wider range of children the opportunity to develop vital oral communication skills.
I have a background that encompasses involvement with young people in a wide range of socio-economic groups: from a librarian in national, public and school libraries, to debating, Shakespeare competition work and private speech teaching. As a result I have become aware of the vital need for all children to have the opportunity to gain skills in oral and communication work. I have also seen the effect of developing communication skills in sometimes unlikely candidates.
I enjoy the challenge of making new contacts and meeting new people and feel I would enjoy visiting different schools to meet and assess a range of young people.
I was particularly encouraged by the Assessors course that I attended recently in Wellington. I was affected by the obvious enthusiasm of many of the other participants. Watching the young volunteers presenting their work and the opportunity to try my hand at assessing them made me feel that this was a job that I could enjoy.
